Information

Date of birth 7th February 1893. Son of Harry (Henry) and Ursula Watkinson, of Hall Green, Rayne, Braintree, Essex. Clarence had three sisters, Florence, Edith Minnie and Elsie Violet and a brother Albert Bertie. Born and lived in Rayne in Felsted Road. 

Clarence went to Rayne School, being admitted on 1st December 1899, leaving on 4th March 1907 and became a farm labourer. Enlisted at Chelmsford. Shown on Rayne War Memorial as Clarence Wilkinson.

The Thiepval Memorial will be found on the D73, off the main Bapaume to Albert road f D929).


 
Theatre of War:

At the very end of the Battle of the Somme in November 1916, the 1st Essex Regiment were in reserve trenches near the village of Meaulte. 

Private Wilkinson was one of several soldiers killed when shells stuck the trenches on the 23rd November 1916.
