Theatre of War:

When the Battle of the Somme started on 1st July 1916, Pte Baker was in reserve with the 2nd Essex,
opposite Beaumont Hamel. After heavy fighting on 1st July the battalion was ordered to hold the front line
trenches until 5th July.
Pte Baker was killed during heavy shelling on 1st July, two days before his brother.
As this ground was fought over
many times during next three years he is one of the many soldiers who
have no known grave.
