Son of William and Mary Ann Turner of Rayne. Born in Rayne.

William went to Rayne School, being admitted on 22 February 1893, leaving on 3rd March 1893. Lived and enlisted in Leyton.

William was a foundry-hand.

The children were Emma, Charles, Lydia, William (see next entry), Walter, Albert, Bertie, Ethel, Florence, Frank, Sidney and Hilda.

Ypres (now leper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders.

The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin and Courtrai, and bears the names of men who were lost without trace during the defence of the Ypres Salient in the First World War.

Theatre of War

William Turner, brother of Sidney , is one of the thousands of soldiers commemorated on the Menin Gate in Ypres. This is the memorial for all those who died in the Ypres area but have no known grave. He died during the third Battle of Ypres, during the advance through the mud towards the village of Zonnebeek
